Are you thinking ahead?
There may be opportunities for university students to undertake work experience or internships with Victorian Government departments.
This can vary from department to department so it is best to contact Human Resources in each department that interests you to request further information.
There are also some opportunities for internships and work experience listed below.
Who can apply
The Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC) Summer Internship Program is a 12 week program on a fixed term basis during the Summer University break. Interns are employed at the base of a VPS Grade 1 on full time basis. The program provides undergraduate university students the opportunity to experience a structured work placement in the department and the portfolio agencies. Additionally, it gives a valuable insight into the role of a leading Victorian Public Service central agency and building capabilities suitable for a career in the VPS.
This program has previously led to interns applying for the VPS Graduate Recruitment and Development Scheme as well as fixed term or ongoing opportunities within the department. Historically, DPC has received an extensive number of high quality applications from students studying a range of disciplines.
About the program
Final and penultimate year university students from a range of academic disciplines are invited to apply. The program commences in November each year.
The Department of Treasury and Finance (DTF) Summer Internship Program provides opportunities for highly motivated, near-final year university students interested in a future career with the Department to gain first-hand experience in the application of accounting and economics in a public policy environment. The program gives a valuable insight into the role of a leading Victorian Public Service central agency that serves the government by providing leadership in economic, financial and resource management. The internship provides a valuable stepping stone that can lead to future employment opportunities within the Department.
Who can apply
Highly motivated economics and accounting and finance students who have completed a minimum of two years full-time study with proven academic ability are invited to apply. Preference will be given to those who will be in their penultimate year of study.
Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in applying economic and/or financial principles and practices in a public policy environment. Many past economics interns have completed their internship before entering their honours year or final year of a master’s degree. For accounting and finance applicants, eligibility for the CPA or CA program upon graduation is considered highly desirable.
The Department’s internship program is advertised through a number of Victorian universities, on the Victorian Government Careers website and on the DTF website. Applications are open from around mid-August each year.
Interns are employed at the base of VPS Grade 1 on a fixed term basis for up to 12 weeks during the summer university break. Successful applicants usually start in the first week of December each year. Conditions of employment are specified in the current Victorian Public Service Agreement.
